When is the best time to visit Levi?

The best month depends on what you want from the trip. Winter is the natural choice for snow activities; summer offers long light evenings and outdoor exploration. Autumn brings colourful landscapes and the return of dark nights. Check the operating dates of your chosen activities before booking flights.

December–January: choose these months for a midwinter atmosphere and short daylight hours. Plan daylight sightseeing carefully and leave time indoors between outdoor activities. February–April: a good period to consider if you want winter activities with progressively longer days. Snow conditions and individual tour seasons still vary.

May–August: plan around hiking, cycling and summer scenery rather than snow safaris. The bright summer nights are unsuitable for aurora viewing. September–November: autumn colours and dark nights can be appealing, but early winter snow activities depend on conditions. An open ski slope does not mean every snowmobile or husky route is ready.

See Visit Levi’s seasonal guide for a month-by-month overview.

Things to do in Levi — even if you do not ski

Levi offers more than downhill skiing. Consider a reindeer farm visit, a husky experience, a guided snowmobile safari, snowshoeing, ice fishing or a sauna visit. Choose a mix of active and relaxed experiences rather than filling every available hour. For an overview of local options, see Visit Levi’s winter activities guide.

For a first snowmobile ride: compare the total excursion length with the time spent riding, whether you share a snowmobile, and the driving requirements. A shorter introduction and a longer single-rider experience serve different needs. Compare our snowmobile safaris in Levi.

For animal experiences: check what is actually included. A reindeer feeding visit, a farm tour and a sleigh ride are different experiences. With huskies, compare the sled distance and passenger arrangements, not only the headline duration. Explore our reindeer experience.

For a quieter day: allow time for a short marked walking route, a café or a sauna. If you want to try ice fishing or explore unfamiliar winter terrain, a guided outing can simplify the equipment and route planning. Browse Levi activities and current availability.

Can you see the Northern Lights in Levi?

Yes, when the sky is dark enough and cloud cover and aurora activity cooperate. Autumn, winter and early spring offer opportunities; bright summer nights do not. No location or forecast can promise a sighting. Give yourself several evenings rather than making your final night the only opportunity.

Our planning suggestion: keep the day before an evening aurora excursion fairly relaxed, and avoid scheduling an early departure immediately afterwards. Read the actual tour duration and cancellation terms before booking. A guided tour and a sighting guarantee are not automatically the same thing. Explore our Northern Lights experiences. For seasonal information, see Visit Levi’s aurora guide.

For independent viewing, consult the official Levi aurora map. Use designated access routes, respect private property and do not walk onto a lake simply because it looks frozen. Follow local trail-opening notices; snowmobile routes and ski tracks are not general walking paths.

Getting to Levi and getting around without a car

Levi is in Sirkka, in the municipality of Kittilä. Kittilä Airport is approximately 15 km from Levi. Check your accommodation’s exact address before choosing a transfer: a cabin outside the centre may need a different arrangement from a village hotel. See the official Levi FAQ for destination information.

Airport buses, taxis, booked transfers and rental cars are options to compare. Check your flight date against the current bus timetable and confirm the stop nearest your accommodation. The seasonal Ski Bus can help with some journeys around the resort, but it is not a substitute for checking how to reach a particular tour. Use Visit Levi’s transport information for current operators and links.

Do you need a car? Not necessarily. A central stay combined with confirmed transfers and tour pickups can work well. For a more remote cabin, check transport costs and availability before committing. Confirm the pickup area, address and time for each excursion; do not assume that every tour collects from every accommodation.

What to wear in Levi in winter

Pack a moisture-managing base layer, an insulating middle layer and warm, wind-resistant outer clothing. Add a hat covering your ears, a neck warmer, mittens, warm socks and insulated boots with room for your toes. Clothing for an active walk may not be warm enough for standing still while waiting for the aurora.

Ask which clothing and equipment your specific tour provides and what you should wear underneath. Rental winter clothing is available locally, but check sizing and collection arrangements in advance. Keep a spare dry pair of socks and gloves accessible. See Visit Levi’s winter clothing advice.

Visiting Levi with children

Our suggestion is to plan one main outdoor activity per day, with a warm break and flexible time afterwards. Before booking, ask about minimum ages, child seating, time outdoors and whether children travel in a sled or as passengers. The shortest tour is not always the easiest: consider the temperature, waiting time and your child’s usual routine.

Tell the organiser your children’s ages and any practical needs before paying. Choose accommodation with straightforward meal and transport arrangements. A late-night aurora outing may suit some families better than others; leave an easy morning afterwards.

A relaxed 3-day Levi itinerary

This is our suggested plan, not a fixed package. Adapt it to weather, available departures and your travel days.

Day 1 — Settle in: explore the village, collect any rental clothing and enjoy a short walk. If arrival timing allows, consider an aurora excursion early in your stay so that later evenings remain available.

Day 2 — Your main adventure: choose a snowmobile safari, husky outing or reindeer visit. Keep the afternoon open for a café, rest or sauna rather than booking tightly connected activities.

Day 3 — Slow down: choose snowshoeing, ice fishing or independent sightseeing on an appropriate marked route. Leave a buffer before your airport transfer. With more days, spread the activities out and preserve some weather flexibility.

Booking, accommodation and budget tips

Compare the full trip cost: accommodation location, airport transfer, meals, equipment, tour pickup and any single-rider supplements. A lower room price farther from the village may come with extra transport costs. For each tour, check the group size, inclusions, cancellation conditions and duration before comparing prices.

Reserve your must-do experiences first, especially around holiday periods, and keep some unbooked time. Tell us your travel dates, accommodation and preferred pace if you would like help choosing activities. Ask Arctic Midnight Group about your Levi plans.

Levi travel FAQs

How many days do you need in Levi?
For a first visit, we suggest three to five nights if your schedule allows. This gives you room for a few activities and quieter time. A longer stay also leaves more evenings to try for the Northern Lights, without guaranteeing them.

Is Levi worth visiting without skiing?
Yes. Build your holiday around animal experiences, snowmobiling, winter walks, sauna and Northern Lights outings. Check the seasonal availability of each activity.

Can you see the Northern Lights from the village?
It can be possible, but local lighting and the view of the sky matter. Choose a suitable designated viewing location and check cloud conditions. A dark sky alone does not guarantee auroras.

Is snow guaranteed in November?
Do not assume that every snow-based excursion will operate on your dates. Confirm directly with the activity provider and keep a backup plan for early winter.

Should I stay in Levi or Ylläs?
Compare the accommodation location, transport and activities that matter to you. We offer experiences in both destinations. If your accommodation is in Ylläs, start with our Ylläs tours rather than assuming a Levi departure includes your pickup.
